Physical (non-chemical) water treatment — magnetic, electronic, electrostatic — has a long history of bold marketing and mixed independent results. Some studies show an effect on how scale crystals form; others show little. That inconsistency is exactly why a careful engineer distrusts a “box on a pipe” that claims to fix everything at once. We share the distrust. The problem with most non-chemical claims isn’t the physics — it’s a missing step.
2. Why a “field-only” box usually disappoints
The missing step is removal. A field can change how calcium carbonate behaves in the water — but changing behavior is not the same as taking material out of the system. If the scale-forming load stays in the loop, it can simply re-deposit somewhere else. A device that only applies a field, with nothing to capture what it loosens, is doing half the job and calling it whole. That’s the gap skeptics correctly smell.
3. What actually works: field + filter

The approach that holds up pairs a physical field (we use an Aragon APEF) with an AVC self-cleaning side-stream filter. Three honest steps:
- The field encourages scale to form as loose particles suspended in the water rather than hardening onto the tubes.
- The filter, on a small side loop, continuously captures those particles — this is where scale is actually removed from the system.
- Descaling: as the water carries less scale, older tube scale gradually dissolves back into the water and is filtered out too.
The honest headline: the filter and the dissolution do the real work — not field “magic.” Even the manufacturer sells the field and the filter as a bundle for exactly this reason. We ran an APEF + AVC bundle on a live cooling tower for 73 days (275 m³/h circulation, a 20 m³/h side stream through an AVC 16L2 filter on a 50-micron screen) and logged the water throughout:

Two honesty notes, because they matter more than the headline:
- The chiller gain (~27–30%) is a one-time de-fouling recovery, not a permanent monthly curve — a heavily fouled system cleaned back toward its design point. A well-maintained plant recovers far less (independent utility studies put it around 5–6%).
- The Legionella result is habitat removal, not a “kill.” It fell to non-detect by removing the scale and biofilm it lives in, filtering the released organisms, and keeping a residual biocide. Total bacteria stayed in the normal 10⁵–10⁶ CFU/mL band throughout.
These are the numbers we can defend. That’s the whole point.
5. What we refuse to claim
Here’s the skepticism turned into a promise — what we won’t say, in any language:
- Not “chemical-free.” An open tower keeps a residual biocide; dosing drops ~35–50%, not to zero.
- No “99.999% kill.” We remove the habitat and filter organisms; we don’t claim a log-kill number.
- No “zero scale forever” or “zero maintenance.” A large reduction, never zero.
- No flat “X% energy saved every month.” The energy gain is a one-time de-fouling recovery, sized to how fouled you are.
- No single baht figure pinned to someone else’s tower.
If a claim sounds too clean to be true, we’ve probably chosen not to make it.

- “Show me measured before/after on a real site.” TSS, turbidity, Legionella, kW/TonR — not a brochure average.
- “What physically removes the material?” If the answer is “the field,” ask where the removed scale goes. A real answer names a filter.
- “What do you refuse to claim?” A vendor who claims everything is hiding something.
- “Does an open tower still need biocide?” The honest answer is yes.
- “Is your energy number ongoing, or a one-time recovery?” The honest answer distinguishes them.
